Sunday sees the 7th Annual West Wight Triathlon and it’s the biggest yet with 300 competitors taking part – 207 individuals and 33 teams.
Local boy Jack Grundy, 20 from Freshwater is favourite in the Men’s event this year with the three previous winners – Daron Perkins, Chris Birch and Dave Woodgate – either injured or not available. In the womens, Nina French’s lay off through injury has opened the door to a new winner – Chris Jackson and Liz Dunlop will be looking to get their name on the trophy, but will be up against some strong mainland girls. Martin Piper and Paul Cameron’s team is once again favourite in the team event.
The first swimmers go off at West Wight Sports Centre at 9.00 and the event is expected to be over around 2.00. The route is one of the most spectacular on the Triathlon circuit taking in the Military Rd on the bike and the River Yar on the run. Around 60 Islanders will be taking part with competitors coming from as far afield as Scotland, Ireland and France.
The Ellen MacArthur Trust is the official charity this year with a number of competitors raising money for this worthy cause.
