Emmy Award-Winning Costumes from ‘the Tudors’ to go back on display at the Mary Rose Museum

Friday 13th January to 15th April 2012

At the Mary Rose Museum, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard

The Mary Rose Trust is delighted to again be able to display some of the costumes, which were worn during the final season of the Emmy Award-winning series ‘The Tudors’ starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers.

The costumes will go on display in the Mary Rose Museum from Friday 13th January until Sunday 15th April 2012. Entry can be gained with a ticket to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

The nine costumes on display will be those that were worn by Jonathan Rhys Meyers as King Henry VIII, Joss Stone as Anne of Cleves, Joely Richardson as Catherine Parr, Maria Doyle Kennedy as Catherine of Aragon, Natalie Dormer as Anne Boleyn, Annabelle Wallis as Jane Seymour and Tamzin Merchant as Catherine Howard.

They were on show in 2010 at the Outstanding Art of Television Costume Design Exhibition in the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising Museum & Galleries, Los Angeles. They came to the UK for the first time in 2011 where they went on display at the Mary Rose Museum before moving onto the Royal Armouries in Leeds to appear in an outstanding exhibition.

Joan Bergin is the Costume Designer and winner of the 2010 Emmy for ‘Outstanding Costume for a Series’, along with Wardrobe Supervisor Susan Cave. Bergin also won Emmys for the series in 2007 and 2008 and received Irish Film and Television Academy awards in 2008 and 2009. Her museum-quality costumes were featured in a Macy’s display in New York City on St. Patrick’s Day. Bergin has contributed to movies including ‘My Left Foot’, ‘In the Name of the Father’ and ’The Prestige’. She has recently worked on the Starz Network production of ‘Camelot’, starring Eva Green and Joseph Fiennes.

Across the series of ‘The Tudors’ they made around 500 costumes and rented and modified countless others. The degree of skill can be seen in every detail of the costumes from cloth to braid to button.

In an interview with the LA Times, Bergin described ‘The Tudors’ as a strange blend of trying to be as authentic as possible but with a twist. She wanted people to look at it and say, ‘Look how sexy and foxy,’ rather than, ‘Oh! who would wear that?’ Balenciaga corsets and Degas ballerinas were her inspiration.

The loan of the costumes has been through the generous support of Joan Bergin and the creator and writer of ‘The Tudors’ Michael Hirst, who gave a talk about the making of the series last year at the museum.

Michael Hirst commented that:

‘I am delighted to offer my support to the new Mary Rose Museum appeal and would encourage everyone with an interest in British History to support it too, and perhaps contribute something towards the £35 million, which it will cost to transform the Museum into a wonderful contemporary space through which to explore our extraordinary past.

The discovery of Henry VIII’s flagship and its retrieval from the sea bed, with thousands of contemporary artefacts, is reason enough to reinvent and reinvigorate a Museum which already houses many iconic objects from our glorious naval history.

So I wish the Trust well in all its endeavours to do justice to what was once lost and in darkness, but is now found and in public sight once more’.

The costumes are on display during the museum opening hours which is daily from 10.00am – 4.30pm. For more information please go to www.historicdockyard.co.uk or call the Mary Rose Museum office 02392 812931.

The Mary Rose Trust would like to acknowledge Joan Bergin for the loan of the costumes, Debenhams Southsea and the National Museum of the Royal Navy for the loan of mannequins

LOVE THEATRE; LOVE HOVERTRAVEL

Hovertravel has great new theatre offers for this year’s panto season and beyond.

Loretta Lale, marketing manager for Hovertravel said: “Hovertravel has some amazing deals which combine the theatre with a great day out. Going to the theatre is a great way to take a break from the shopping rush and enjoy yourself in a whirl of song, dance, great comedy and fantastic entertainment.”

If you are looking for a classic pantomime then don your glad rags for this year’s Kings Theatre Spectacular Pantomime, Cinderella. Starring some of the best talent from our favourite soaps, including Tracy Shaw (Maxine Peacock, Coronation Street), Leah Bracknell (Zoe Tate, Emmerdale), Marcus Patrick (Ben Davis, Hollyoaks), Stuart Wade (Biff Fowler, Emmerdale) and Tom Owen (Last of the Summer Wine). Until 01 January 2012, you can get a day return on the hovercraft and a ticket to the production for just £13.50 (weekday) per person and £15 (weekend) per person.

Enjoy a glitzy afternoon in London’s West End and entertain the kids at the same time. Hovertravel has teamed up with Love Theatre to offer fantastic deals on hovercraft transport and theatre tickets. Join Shrek and his loyal steed Donkey, as they set off on a quest to rescue the beautiful (if slightly unpredictable) Princess Fiona. Add the pocket-sized Lord Farquaad, a gang of fairytale misfits and a biscuit with attitude, and you’ve got this year’s must see new musical comedy. Hovertravel gives you a day return on the hovercraft and the option to see a matinee performance on either a Thursday or a Sunday for just £49 per person.

Alternatively come and see Jersey Boys, based on a true story it tells the story of how a group of blue-collar boys from the wrong side of the tracks became one of the biggest American pop music sensations of all time – Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, selling 175 million records worldwide all before they were 30! With Hovertravel you get a day return on the hovercraft and the choice to see either the Tuesday or Sunday matinee for £49 per person.

These offers run until 31 January 2012 but look out for more shows being added soon.

For more information about these special offers please visit: http://www.hovertravel.co.uk/special-offers/index.php

Hovertravel operations remain suspended today and tomorrow morning. Hovertravel has arranged alternative travel for all of their customers. All passengers with Season or Travel Cards and those with pre-paid tickets will be provided with a free of charge voucher from Hovertravel, which will enable them to travel on Wightlink services. Hovertravel staff will be at both Portsmouth Harbour and Pier Head terminals. A further update will be provided by Hovertravel by 12:00 hrs tomorrow.

The suspension of services follows an issue with a propeller on the Solent Express Hovercraft on 30th October. Hovertravel is working with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) to ensure full safety checks are completed on its hovercraft fleet and to ensure the integrity of all our operating systems in conjunction with the MCA. Hovertravel hopes to resume service shortly. Ongoing safety checks and investigations into the blade and propellers on all hovercraft are in progress.

The safety of customers, crew and hovercraft is of paramount importance and Hovertravel has been working with the MCA continually throughout the weekend to ensure the capability of the craft before they are returned to service.

Hovertravel confirms that all passengers holding reservations and Season or Travel Card holders will be looked after and transferred on to alternative travel arrangements. We are deeply sorry for any inconvenience caused, and are grateful for our passengers’ understanding. We are confident that, with the support of the entire Hovertravel team, and the MCA, we will complete this process as quickly as we can.

Further updates will be available in the Service Status section of Hovertravel’s websitewww.hovertravel.com (under the Travel Info heading). We will update the website and our terminal staff will be on duty as normal throughout the weekend and Monday to assist and update this situation. It must be stressed that we will only commence operations when Hovertravel and the MCA are entirely satisfied.

The Urban Wastelands Project: Day Bowman / Ian Knox / Transglobal Underground

Sat 10 Dec 2011 – Sat 4 Feb 2012, The West Gallery, Quay Arts, Isle of Wight

The Urban Wastelands Project is a collaboration of new work by British painter, Day Bowman, alongside award-winning film maker, Ian Knox, and music by internationally acclaimed music group Transglobal Underground, as a finale event.

Bowman’s paintings invite us to enter a world of gasometers, abandoned water pipes and barbed wire, referencing the shapes and forms of much post-industrial architecture such as cooling towers, water towers and wasteland detritus. Knox’s short film, Jonah and the Whale, reflects the gritty landscapes alluded to in Bowman’s large, gestural paintings – the journey becomes a metaphor for mass transmigration. Echoing these feelings is a collection of traditional songs of emigration, exile and longing put through the radical machine and electronic beats that are the hallmark of the legendary Transglobal Underground in an exclusive live performance at Quay Arts.

Dates to remember:

Exhibition Preview: Sat 10 Dec 3 – 4pm All Welcome

Artist’s Talk by Day Bowman: Sat 21 Jan Starts 2.30pm The West Gallery, FREE Just turn up

The Hairy Bikers Prepare For War On Board HMS Victory In Their Latest BBC Series

The Hairy Bikers are back and they’re on a mission to prove that British food is the best in the world in their new BBC2 series, The Hairy Bikers’ Best Of British, which will be on screens from Monday 14th November at 3.45pm every weekday afternoon for six weeks. Episode 6 on Monday 21st November explores the theme of ‘War’ and will feature HMS Victory and HMS Illustrious, whilst she was in Portsmouth Naval Base.

The Hairy Bikers’ Best Of British will take a culinary journey through time and celebrate the very best of our food heritage. Just about everything we eat has a fascinating narrative behind it. The Hairies travel all over the country and delve into history books and archives, as they journey into our culinary past. It’s an absorbing subject, as Si and Dave explain: “Everything we put on our plates tells us something about where we come from – from how the recipes evolved to the way in which we produced the ingredients. If you want to find out about Britain’s past, take a look at what we eat now and join us as we meet some of our nation’s food heroes, who keep our gourmet heritage alive.”

In next Monday’s episode, The Bikers explore how the British have managed to create fantastic food even at times of war, when supplies are often scarce, and how some of Britain’s favourite dishes have evolved out of the innovation and spirit of the people who lived through rationing. With their unique banter and camaraderie, the Hairy duo try their hand at rabbit stew and carrot cake, visit HMS Victory to find out what Nelson’s men ate at sea, and meet the army cooks to learn what troops on the frontline eat today.

Lieutenant Commander DJ ‘Oscar’ Whild RN, Commanding Officer of HMS VICTORY said, “It was a delight to have both David and Simon on board HMS Victory to film extracts for their new series. They were both very interested in all aspects of ship board life, and in addition to the food and drink, were most intrigued by the discipline required to keep 821 people in order. The food that was prepared was actually very tasty and not at all as I would have expected – I could have eaten more! I am very much looking forward to seeing the series when it is aired next Monday.”

The Hairies explore the mouth-watering recipes of our past and present. In their studio kitchen, Si and Dave add their own twist to classics such as Coronation Chicken, Kedgeree, Barnsley Chop with Cumberland Sauce and Dundee Cake. The duo also reveal the history and evolution of Britain’s favourite dishes and ingredients and, with the help of wonderful and very varied archive film, bring our national culinary heritage to life.

Along the way the bikers can’t resist dipping into TV history to watch some of the chefs and programmes that inspired them as cooks. Each programme is themed, with subjects ranging fromWaterways and Picnics to The Royal Family and Times of Plenty. Over the weeks viewers will build a fun, nostalgic and comprehensive knowledge of British Social History from Roman times to the present day. This epic series captures all the warmth and fun of the Hairies – friends for more than two decades with a fresh, down-to-earth approach to cooking and a contagious passion for what they do – and presents history in a fresh and innovative way.

Executive Producer Pete Lawrence (Nigel Slater’s Simple Suppers, Simon Hopkinson – The

Good Cook) believes that Best Of British will be a must-see for historians and foodies alike: “The food is exceptional in the series; you finish each episode feeling deliciously hungry and with a wealth of knowledge and understanding of what makes British Food so incredible and something of which we can be justifiably proud.”

HOVERTRAVEL’S BOOK SIGNING SUCCESS

Hovertravel, the fastest Isle of Wight passenger service across the Solent, hosted the first ever book signing on 27 October onboard their hovercraft and in terminals with motoring journalist Ashley Hollebone, author of The Hovercraft Story.

Ashley Hollebone travelled to and from Ryde and Southsea signing books and talking to passengers and fans of the book. There was a lot of interest from all ages with some hovercraft enthusiasts as young as ten wanting a signed copy. The Hovercraft Story details the history of the hovercraft right back to its invention in 1965, supported by a great selection of photos.

Ashley Hollebone, author of The Hovercraft Story, said: “I have always had an interest in hovercrafts and decided to write The Hovercraft Story because although it is such a unique method of transport there is very little written about them. I currently have a hovercraft which I keep at The Hovercraft Museum in Gosport and it was here that I sourced many of the pictures and information for my book. Hovertravel has been very helpful and supportive ever since I first met with them to discuss the idea of the book. To be a part of having the first ever book signing onboard a hovercraft with Hovertravel was a fantastic experience, it was great meeting with fans and hovercraft enthusiasts alike.”

Pick up a special signed copy of The Hovercraft Story by Ashley Hollebone in either the Ryde or Southsea Hovertravel terminal.

MAYVILLE: THE SMALL SCHOOL WITH THE BIG HEART

“One of the South’s best kept secret”, is how parents at Mayville high School in Southsea often refer to their school. Mr and Mrs Dean have three sons at Mayville. Mr Dean says, “It’s a school that looks after its pupils, and they in turn feel confident, and so they achieve.”

This years GCSE’s results are testament to this. A stunning 97 per cent of all who took the exams earnt A* to C grades in 5 subjects. Considering that 25 per cent of the school population is dyslexic, and are there because of the school’s renowned dyslexia unit, this is no mean feat.

Head teacher Martin Castle says, “Consistently strong GCSE results are important but it is the individual achievement that is the real key to the success of the school.”

Mr Dean says, “My wife and I are not high earners and many of my friends ask how you can afford to educate three children privately? It’s thanks to scholarships and sibling discount and the fact that the fees are very competitively priced, that our children get a top quality education with small class sizes.” Our fleet of school minibuses pick up from Portsmouth Harbour station, Hayling ferry, and the Hovercraft, for those travelling into the city.

Now Mayville can also boast the use of its own playing fields in Southsea. Things couldn’t be better for our small Hampshire school. Mayville parents, teachers and children know it, and we are only too happy to let you into our secret.

Drop in day 10:30am until 6pm – on 29th September 2011 call 023 9273 4847

Staff, trustees and supporters at West Wight Sports Centre are recovering fom an epic weekend. 39 of them swam the Solent on Saturday and on Sunday over 300 took part in the annual West Wight Triathlon.

Bill French, 68 from Brighstone trustee of the charity that runs the Centre was the bravest – completing both events in full. Coming ashore at Colwell after the 70 minute swim from Hurst he was elated, exhausted and cold, but recovered sufficiently before the next day when he swam 600 metres (this time in the pool), cycled 35 km and ran 7.5 km in the triathlon. Bill said “It was a fantastic weekend – challenging and nerve wracking – I loved every minute” Lesley Dye 48, from Freshwater also took part in both events – being part of a team in the Triathlon.

The Solent Swim was a charity fund raising event for the West Wight Sports Centre Trust and organisers expect to have raised in excess of £13,000. Centre Manager Clare Griffin said, “The Solent Swim was amazing – our swimmers were awesome and the spectators that turned out to support the arrival of each of them at Colwell were great. It was a brilliant morning”

Amongst the swimmers were Freshwater GP, Dr Annette Scivier who will have raised over £4,000 (part of Annette’s funds will go to Huntingdons Association); event organiser, Mandy Pearce; Island musician, Doug Alldred; story teller, Sue Bailey; 67 year old marathon runner, Madeline Goodman; as well as staff members Gay Grieve, Shirley Cokes, Pat Johnson, Vicky Miller, and Kate Phelps.

Other swimmers were: Karen Baker, Fiona Bawcombe, Natalie Bee, Christie Bird, Lorna Bolton, Joe Campebell, Amy CHettle, Chris Court,Peter CZapp, Mandie Davison, Mark Duffus, Lesley Dye, Chris Evertson, Jo Hanks, Christopher Heath, Keith Hobbins, Dave Hollis, Ingrid Kelly, Janie Martin, Neil Oliver, Rachel Parsloe, Shaun Pearce, Anna-Lisa Price, Jacqui Robertson,George Sanders, Sarah Sargent, Anna Smith, helen Staniford, Ellie Stavely, Isobel Taylor, Stephanie Weller.

The triathlon is an annual event and this year saw nearly 300 competitors take part. More teams than ever entered with 14 being made up from Vestas employees. Trust chairman, Gill Kennett said “We are in awe of the efforts that so many people have made this weekend – completing the Solent Swim and Triathlon. Not only that but more than 200 volunteers have helped us in some way or another to run these events”

Babies as young as a few weeks old will soon be able to take part in new structured swimming lessons starting in Freshwater and Cowes this Autumn. The multi-award winning Water Babies classes are designed to make the most of babies’ natural affinity with water, teaching confidence and safety techniques and enabling them to swim both above and below the waters’ surface.

‘Sadly, drowning is still the third highest cause of accidental death in the UK,’ explains Budge Pountney, director of Water Babies locally. A former rugby star, he set up Water Babies classes in September 2007, together with wife Ali, having been so impressed with the course when taking their own daughter, Naeve, to lessons in Northampton. ‘In most cases, it’s the shock of sudden submersion that causes children to panic. We believe that by introducing babies to water as early as possible, they’ll be less likely to experience fear if they did fall in.

‘With progressive training, babies can be taught life saving skills such as turning onto their backs or swimming to the nearest solid object, following a sudden submersion,’ he adds. ‘Last year alone we had three of our tiny clients save their own lives: one in an unheated pool, another in a canal and a third in a flood swelled stream. It’s fantastic what vital skills children can learn, despite still being so young. And it’s so important that they do. All of these children were just two when it happened.’

Jo Hobbs who has been swimming both her children with Water Babies in Southampton since September 2007 has now trained as a water babies teacher.

She will be running classes at West Wight Leisure Centre on a Monday and at UKSA in Cowes on a Thursday and Saturday.

For further information you can call Water Babies on 01983 717005 or email us humptydumpty@waterbabies.co.uk. Alternatively you can check out the water babies website on www.waterbabies.co.uk.

The biggest ever Cross Solent Swim takes place on Thursday September 8th when 50 swimmers will be leaving Hurst Castle at 0730 and heading for Colwell Bay on The Isle of Wight.

The ‘Wild West Solent Swim’ has been organised by West Wight Sports Centre Trust – the charity that runs West Wight Sports Centre in Freshwater, Isle of Wight. The future of the community sports centre is under threat because of possible reductions in local government funding. Trustees and staff have organised the swim to raise badly needed funds for the charity as well as setting their users a fitness challenge.

The 50 swimmers have been training both in the pool at the Centre and on the beaches around the West Wight. They will be accompanied by 30 kayakers, a number of ribs and safety boats as well as both the Freshwater Lifeboat vessels. All-in-all it will be quite a spectacle and never before have so many people crossed in one go.
