Caterpillar Music continue to provide much needed funding for Island based children’s charities. Since 2006 they have now raised £8000.00 and this year saw over 150 children and parents from all the classes come together to raise money for The Kerry Green Trust who help Island children with life threatening or terminal illnesses fulfil their dreams and wishes

On Saturday, 16th October, Maggie Carberry, the class co-ordinator for Caterpillar Music organised a fun-filled afternoon to coincide with the Book Launch of her book “Cosmo-The Caterpillar Music Bear” which was held at The Chequers Inn, Rookley. Maggie says “This has been a very special fundraising year not only for our chosen charity but also for the Under 5′s who come along to the Caterpillar Music classes. Cosmo the bear joined our classes just over a year ago and was an immediate hit with the children who have loved taking him home for the week before bringing him back to class along with tales and photographs of his adventures. In light of Cosmo’s popularity it seemed clear that if I wrote a book portraying the photographs and all the fun he has had while staying with the children that we could donate all the proceeds from the sale of the book to charity. Over the course of the summer, the Cosmo adventure story book took shape and the pre-orders came flooding in which meant we were able to reach our target for The Kerry Green Trust and thanks to the generosity of many Island businesses who donated to our Raffle, the total amount raised came in at £1000.00.” In honour of Cosmo, the children were invited to come along dressed up as bears and to partake in bear races for which there were prizes. There were Mummy Bear and Daddy Bear races with chocolate treats for everyone and once again Bev Bax showed her support by providing free face painting for all the children. Maggie added, ”I am delighted that, once again, we have managed to raise a substantial amount of money for another needy Island charity and that the children also have a lasting memory of the event through their special Cosmo book. If you would like to meet Cosmo at a Caterpillar Music class, or purchase a book please contact Maggie on 01983-617778 or visit www.caterpillarmusic.com/iow

Isle of Wight Steam Railway to be in

Televised Finals of

The National Lottery Awards 2010

Railway Project Tops ‘Best Heritage Projects’ Category!

The Isle of Wight Steam Railway has won a place in the Final of the National Lottery Awards, and now goes through to the final round of voting with the chance of winning the top award in the Best Heritage Project category. The winner will be announced during a live BBC1 television programme, currently scheduled for the evening of Saturday 4th September.

Working under the project title ‘Isle of Wight Railway Restoration’, the Havenstreet-based steam line reached the Final by topping the Heritage Projects category in the semi-finals against nine other Lottery-funded projects from around the country. To win the top award the Railway must now receive the most votes in a new nationwide public vote from 26th July to 13th August. Votes already cast in the semi-finals will not count in the Final, so the Railway is seeking major public support to ensure it flies the flag for the Isle of Wight and for Heritage Railways, by asking people to vote for ‘Isle of Wight Railway Restoration’ when voting opens on 26th July.

Steve Oates, Chairman of The Isle of Wight Steam Railway, says: “Our heritage railway has a unique collection of historic steam locomotives, Victorian and Edwardian carriages, and other rare rolling stock, all of which are recognised to be of national importance. Lottery funding is so vital to us; it has helped us to secure a fascinating piece of Island railway history, and to ensure we can continue to restore, preserve and operate these unique railway vehicles for future generations to enjoy. We’re really hoping the public gets behind us to vote as it would be a real boost to get national recognition for the work that we do.”

The Ellen MacArthur Trust is a charity based on the IOW working with young people between 8 and 24, helping to rebuild their confidence after treatment for cancer and leukaemia.

Established in 2003 by world-renowned yachtswoman and IOW resident Dame Ellen MacArthur, the Trust now welcomes young people from hospitals all over the country to participate in short sailing trips, initially around the IOW. These young people have often spent long periods of their childhood in hospital, missing out on school and isolated from their peer group. The trips give them a chance to regain their independence and take control of their lives again, meeting others who understand what they’ve been through. We aim to rebuild the confidence lost during treatment, and simply have fun, with sailing being the perfect catalyst.

The young people sleep and eat on board, and are encouraged to participate in all aspects of crew life, from helming the yacht, to washing up, with the emphasis on teamwork. The sailing is mixed with shore-based activities and the Trust is supported by local businesses and organizations including UKSA, Liz Earle, Plaza Ice Creams, Yarmouth Lifeboat, Red Funnel and Solent Yacht Club, helping to make sure all the young people have a great time.

They can then return each year, to sailing regattas, a residential dinghy week in Essex, or for longer cruising. In 2009 we sailed Round Britain, with 74 young people crewing on one of 16 separate legs. Trust crews sailed under London’s famous Tower Bridge, were welcomed into Belfast by the Lady Mayor, and saw dolphins and whales. The yacht returned to Cowes in September at the end of a truly inspirational voyage!
A pamper afternoon to make you feel better and help others

National Student Volunteering Week 2010 takes place from 22 to 28 February, with events running nationwide across schools, colleges and universities. Isle of Wight College Students are getting on board at YMCA Isle of Wight Winchester House, putting their hair and beauty skills into practice at the Make-over for All’ charity fundraiser.

Students will be on hand at YMCA Winchester house from 1:30-4:30 on Wednesday 24 February, offering an afternoon of hair styling, make-up, nail art and pampering for just £4, including refreshments.

YMCA Isle of Wight Volunteer Project Coordinator Kelly Matthews said “this event will give the college students a chance to show off their creative skills and bring members of society together in a common purpose.” The event is part of YMCA Fairthorne Group’s Vinvolved project, funded by Vinspired, an independent charity supporting volunteering opportunities for 16-25 year olds across England.

All proceeds will go towards Help2Grieve, a bereavement service for young people on the Isle of Wight. Money raised will help support one-to-one work and group sessions for children and young people coping with loss. Further details can be found at www,ymca-fg.org/help2grieve

The Haiti Appeal Concert will be an evening of live music and DJ’s at Cowes Yacht Haven Events Centre on Saturday evening, February 6th for a maximum of 1000 guests.

The Haiti Appeal Concert – Isle of Wight has been created by Lee Taylor in association with Spencer Rigging Ltd to raise vital funding for the Disaster Emergency Committee.

The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) was formed in 1963. They are an umbrella organisation for 13 humanitarian aid agencies. At times of overseas emergency, the DEC brings together a unique alliance of the UK’s aid, corporate, public and broadcasting sectors to rally the nation’s compassion, and ensure that funds raised go to DEC agencies best placed to deliver effective and timely relief to people most in need. The DEC’s remit is to unite agency efforts in times of disaster – such as flood, earthquake or famine – wherever it happens in the world. The way the DEC approach their work is to maximise funds raised and ensure they are spent in an effective and fully accountable way.

The concert will be headlined by Island bands:

The Chancers

The Chancers have enjoyed some fantastic and inspirational support slots including, The Pea’s, New Master Sounds, Scratch Perverts, Cuban Brothers & Roy (THE VIBE) Ayers. With some encouraging sessions recorded with Paul Butler under their belt, they are already enjoying transmission on foreign & local frequencies with a self penned and recorded live album and approaching serious sessions for a debut studio long player… Chosen as the UK’s most inspired unsigned band by Radio 1 listeners & Rob Da Bank, hands shaken by The Beastie Boys after performing at The Bestival, Persuading Soul 2 Soul to play the threatened Isle of Wight – Ryde Theatre, Dj-ing for Rizla as The Invisible Players, a Chancers invited to play onstage with soul singing sensation Jhelisa Anderson….These are just some early highlights to be blessed their way. Regular appearances at Isle of Wight Festival & Bestival have given The Chancers the opportunity to prove and refine their craft and graft amongst some of the best names in the business.

The Kurves

Lead singer Jamie Fineran, originally from the Isle of Wight, moved away aged only 16 to join the armed forces. During his time in the army he served during heated conflict in Ulster, Northern Ireland. It is through his time in the forces that Jamie penned a book of lyrics and songs he would eventually bring with him to The Kurves. Originally a duo, Jamie and Chris, The Kurves were formed in August 2007. In less than a year The Kurves have written enough material for three albums, received airplay on Local, and BBC national radio – becoming Isle of Wight gig favorites in the process. The Kurves have also played a host of festivals in 2008 – culminating with performances at the ‘Wight Air Festival’ alongside The Pigeon Detectives and The Operators – and BBC Radio 1′s ‘Bestival’ alongside such diverse acts as The Human League, Gary Newman and Pendulum. In 2009 the kurves started of in full motion and again played the Bestival alongside such acts as the kooks, Lily Allen and many others. Since then the kurves have had a break but 2010 will see the guys come back with some mighty songs and fill a host of Gigs throughout the Country. They all look forward to seeing you very soon.

The Concert will also have special guests and DJ’s to entertain the crowd.

Ticket sales have been kindly managed and sponsored by Red Funnel and can be purchased at www.redfunnel.co.uk/haiti at £10 each. All money raised will go directly to the DEC.

‘I feel that the tragedy in Haiti is a horrific reminder how we sometimes lose perspective of our lives but the offers of help and support that I have received have been overwhelming and I truly feel this concert will show that we are a small island with a big heart.’

The Isle of Wight branch of The National Autistic Society (NAS) has launched a new websiteto give help, advice and information to local families affected by autism.

Visitors to the new website can find information about autism and details of what help and support is available in the local area. The new site contains all the latest branch news with details of forthcoming events such as coffee mornings, support groups, fundraising events and autism-friendly cinema screenings around the Island. The site also features photo galleries and there are even pages for young people with autism and their siblings which will feature social stories and games.

NAS Isle of Wight Branch Web Team co-ordinator, Gillian Elsom said “We are really excited with the new website and we hope to keep our members updated and entertained with news stories and interactive features. Autism is much more common than most people think and it affects each person in a different way. Therefore, we have made the site accessible to as many people as possible by adding features such as the option for extra large text and the website is speech enabled meaning that it is read out loud to the user.”

The website is now live and can be accessed at www.autism.org.uk/isleofwight.

Katie Mairis from Cowes is organising a FestiviTea party on Saturday 28th November 2009 at Cowes Baptist Church, Moorgreen Rd, Cowes to help raise funds for The Isle of Wight branch of the National Autistic Society (NAS), the UK’s leading charity for people affected by autism, and is inviting people to come along!

This local event is one of many FestiviTea parties being organised nationwide, in homes, community centres, church halls and workplaces.

Katie whose own son has recently been referred to Oak House for an ASD assessment said: “Our FestiviTea party is going to be a great opportunity for us to get together and raise money for our local branch of the NAS. There will be gluten free cakes, activities for the young to include decorating a gingerbread Christmas tree, drawing etc. Plus lovely toys for the children to enjoy whilst giving the grown ups the chance to have a cuppa and a nice mince pie or yummy cake. Phoenix cards and Usborne books will also be on sale with 20% going to the NAS IOW branch. Katie is also wanting to help raise awareness of autism as she knows herself of how it impacts their daily lives as a family. Autism is a serious, lifelong and disabling condition, but the right support at the right time can make an enormous difference to people’s lives.”

Jane Asher, President of The National Autistic Society and famous for her cake baking, said: “Holding a FestiviTea Party is a wonderful way to raise money for charity and also to have a great time with your friends and family. Christmas can be a very busy and stressful time for all, but it’s especially difficult for the half a million people affected by autism: this is a great chance to relax for a few hours and help other families across the UK.”

For more information about the Cowes FestiviTea party call Katie on 240464 or to find out how to organise your own, visit www.festivitea.org.uk or call Louise on 08727 308768.
