National Nest Box Week 2010
As part of National Nest Box week on Monday (15th) YMCA vinvolved volunteer’s organised and ran a nest box making session with Daycamp children at Winchester House, Shanklin.
The natural nest sites on which many of our bird species depend, such as holes in trees and buildings, are fast disappearing as gardens and woods are ‘tidied’ and old houses are repaired. Since National Nest Box Week was launched in 1997, thousands of enthusiastic naturalists across the UK have put up boxes to compensate for this loss. It is estimated that there are now 5-6 million boxes in gardens across the UK.
National Nest box week was set up by the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) reminding people that it is the time of the year to provide dozens of species of birds with new homes. Previously on Saturday, a group of volunteer’s Christina Roman, Rebecca Eglinton, Jane Johnson and Sian Matthews prepared the timber using an electric saw and drills.
With guidance from staff and volunteers, children in Daycamp’s sanded each section of the nest boxes, assembled using tools and painted each one in spectacular individual designs!
The YMCA Isle of Wight Daycamp Scheme is suitable for children aged 4 – 14, the days are filled with a range of creative play and trips to the beach.
