Shanklin ice

How was it handled?

After the recent ice and snow, many of us Islanders have had time to reflect on how the cold snap affected our lives.

I was trapped in Shanklin for a few days and although it was at times frustrating, I did see a few examples of great community spirit.

I know that for many Islanders though, things were really hard. Many who could not get to work would loose money, the pavements were at times lethal, why was the grit not used on them?

I live at Gurnard Pines but work in Shanklin. I was one of those people that was on my way home when i got as far as Newport I couldn’t get any further than the hospital roundabout decided to turn down honey hill, half way down a bus had slid and hit a car after that it took me about another 2 hours to get back to Shanklin were I’ve been staying for the past 10 days with my boyfriend. The bit that is getting to me is that my mother was staying with me at the time she couldn’t get out for 10 days because no cars could get in or out of Gurnard Pines because they didn’t do anything to get rid of the snow IE..NO GRIT NO SALT and no-one helping to clear the snow, I think that Gurnard pines management could have done alot more to help the people living and staying there.
