It’s a busy time in the world of politics – so it’s no surprise that the St John’s College Politics Society is hard at work capitalising on opportunities to bring the world of politics to its members!
Last week saw the Society host two hustings for Portsmouth ParliamentaryCandidates, and on Wednesday 6 May Shami Chakrabarti CBE is visiting the College to address the Society on issues relating to personal freedom and security. Shami Chakrabarti has been Director of Liberty (the National Council for Civil Liberties)since 2003, after a background in the law. She started working for Liberty the day beforethe 9/11 terrorist attacks and has been constantly in the news in connection with issues of personal freedom and state security. As well as her civil liberties work, she is a frequentlyinvited contributor to BBC Radio 4 and various newspapers and TV programmes on the topic of human rights and civil liberties.
The talk starts at 12pm and will focus on the issues surrounding civil liberties and human rights, topics which feature heavily in the A Level Politics course. The talk will be attended by St John’s College and Portsmouth High School A Level students, Scholars, members of the Politics Society and the local community. The audience will be given the opportunity for questions afterwards and Shami’s first book ‘On Liberty’ will be available to purchase on the day. All are welcome.
