A successful year of promoting local traders and businesses and strengthening Portsmouth’s economy of small enterprises and independent ventures is well underway for events firm Love Southsea.
When Love Southsea’s founder, Louise Whitmore, founded the event organisation firm in 2008, she did so with the intention of giving local traders and creators opportunities to sell their wares, providing more things for locals and tourists to do, and ultimately giving prospective visitors another reason to come to Portsmouth.
Since a humble start with smaller markets at the Square Tower in Old Portsmouth, Love Southsea has grown organically, amassing a network of partnerships with some of Portsmouth and Southsea’s most talented traders, craftspeople, and small businesses.
The Palmerston Road markets have become increasingly well-known across the city and surrounding regions for their carnival feel, with more independent street food traders and an increased cultural presence courtesy of local musicians and buskers, more interactive stalls, and even a number of children’s arts workshops and raffles run by local charities.
Top Banana, a local children’s circus workshop, showed young people how to use circus equipment to pull off carnival tricks at the March weekend market, and local hospice care charity Rowan’s Hospice raffled off a car to fundraise.
Local music venue The Wedgewood Rooms took up a stall to promote upcoming gigs and new releases from Portsmouth’s finest musicians and bands.
In 2015, Love Southsea will also be hosting markets at a number of other events, such as the Rural & Seaside Show — formerly the Heavy Horse Show — on Castle Field from Saturday 2nd May to Monday 4th May.
The independent events firm will be taking on the booking and management of the first day of the Southsea Food Festival in Palmerston Road, which takes place on 18th July.
In April, the Love Southsea Market in Palmerston Road is due to take place over the course of three days in celebration of Easter, spanning from Good Friday through Saturday 4th to Easter Sunday on April 5th. For more information go to www.lovesouthsea.co.uk
