Opening of ‘New Look’ Wootton Station
The newly constructed station building, extended platform and associated facilities at Wootton Station has been formally opened by Chairman of Wootton
Parish Council and Wootton Village Partnership, Ken Morris.
Following a successful £40,000 fundraising appeal and a £35,000 grant through LEADER, the Isle of Wight Steam Railway has been able to redevelop Wootton Station into a typical country terminus reminiscent of an Isle of Wight Central Railway station from 100 years ago! The new station building itself is a replica of the former
IW Central Railway station building which stood at Havenstreet until a replacement was constructed in the 1920s. The work, which has taken some six months to complete includes a new station building, extension of the platform, the provision of power and other services across the site, and replica signage and advertising hoardings.
The opening ceremony was in the presence of representatives from Wootton Parish Council and the local community, representatives from LEADER, the builders Bob & Ollie Mackett, and Steam Railway staff, volunteers and members.
